Practise in German, with English help when you need it

Get familiar with German questions and use English translations to check words or answers you don’t understand yet.

2 min read

Knowing the answer and understanding the German wording can be two separate challenges when you’re preparing for the Zurich Grundkenntnistest.

I’ve changed the way English support works in SwissFlashcards to help you practise both. Questions and answer choices stay in German, with English translations you can open when you need help.

Read the German first

You’ll see the German question in practice, review and practice tests. This gives you regular chances to become familiar with the wording in the official German question bank.

Try reading the question and all the choices before opening a translation. You might understand more than you expect, even if one word is unfamiliar.

Open English help when you need it

Choose English as your interface language in Settings. Where a translation is available, you’ll see Show English Translation beneath the question.

Tap it to see the available English translations of the question and answer choices. You can hide them again when you’re ready to return to the German.

Your menus, buttons and instructions can be in English throughout. Changing the interface language keeps the study questions in German.

Give an unfamiliar word a second look

Here’s a small routine to try:

  1. Read the German question and try to understand what it’s asking.
  2. Open the English translation if a word or choice is unclear.
  3. Return to the German and read it once more.
  4. Choose your answer, then check the feedback in practice.

The translation is there to help you understand the question. You can use it as often as you need and try relying on it less as the wording becomes familiar.

I hope this makes German questions feel more approachable, one practice session at a time.
